Get the look: Anne Hathaway

GET THE LOOK (and Get Smart!): Anne Hathaway

Girls and guys, you probably don't know this, but many bloggers just pop text from a press release or email into their blogs and never tell you. I have never done that before - but I already told you I'm on a borrowed computer and on borrowed time because I'm on the way out of town... And so a (sad) FCH First: I'm going to do a quickie here and just put in the email I got about this look. But I'm such a fan of Anne Hathaway's and of Lancome's, and I wanted you to see this, so I AM SORRY and I will never do this again unless I'm in dire straits. Hopefully when I come home I'll be able to give you some artistry tips to help you get this look and give you some alternate product options. For now, I present: Anne Hathaway...

Kam_1096_3

"Last Thursday, Lancôme hosted a special screening of Get Smart with Anne Hathaway at the private Core Club in New   York City. The screening benefited the Lollipop Theater Network, an amazing charitable organization with which Anne is highly involved. By providing first-run movies, volunteers like Anne bring cheer to children with serious illnesses who sadly miss seeing these films in the theater due to their long hospital stays. As Lancôme’s newest ambassadress and the face of Magnifique (the fragrance that debuts this August), Anne made us proud as she mingled with guests and talked to them about her involvement with the charity.

Celebrity makeup artist Julie Harris did Anne’s makeup for the screening and gave us the scoop on how to recreate the look. Anne has the most gorgeous porcelain skin (she’s a major proponent of sunscreen) so Julie played up her eyes, cheeks and lips. She used Lancôme black liquid Artliner on the upper lash line to make Anne’s eyes pop and added a few coats of Lancôme Hypnôse mascara, giving her lashes a beautiful boost of volume and length. Julie added just a touch of color to the apples of the cheeks with Giorgio Armani Sheer Cream Blush #2. She set the look by dusting Laura Mercier translucent powder all over Anne’s face. Julie opted for a soft neutral colored pout and finished the look with Lancôme Color Design Lipcolor in B-List. Check out the attached photo of Anne at the screening."

Computer issues...

Bad news:

FCH is having computer issues. Namely: I have destroyed yet another power cord. (don't ask!)

I'm having one delivered shortly, but until it gets here I won't be able to post much (if at all- depending on how I am able to sneak visits in from other computers). Of course, it will probably come on Thursday, which is the day that I'm leaving town to go watch my baby brother get married (sob!).

I promise to post ASAP and once the wedding is over I should be able to resume posting with my regular gusto. :)

On the plus side, hopefully the bride-to-be will let me post pictures of the makeup I'm doing for the rehearsal dinner and the wedding. She's a gorgeous girl and we're so lucky to have her steal my brother away from us join our crazy family!

Stay tuned and if you're looking for something to read, go over our archives which are located on the left sidebar!

xoxo

Love the girls? I know I do. And despite the crappy critics' reviews, I loved this movie! And, being a makeup artist, one of the things I was concentrating on (while most of you were looking at the shoes) was the gorgeous makeup! The flushed cheeks, the impeccable eyes, the soft lip shades (except in the wedding scene)...   Wanna know how it was done? Click through the jump!

FCH loves: Rhianna.

Does she ever get it wrong?

Makeup: flawless. Skin: flawless. Absurd hair jewelry: flawless.

Is it just me, or despite the fact that this outfit would be RIDICULOUS on anyone else,
doesn't it somehow work for her?

She's even cute when she's stuffing food in her mouth.
Not many people can say that.

Plus, she's with Chris Brown, and there's nothing wrong with that! :)

Sure, I have that outfit n my closet. (and there it stays!)

I am completely demoralized...

I was working so hard on a really great post all day - and a new feature, too. Unfortunately, my computer crashed and I lost it all. I'm demoralized and beaten-down, so I thought we'd check out some makeup artistry porn and call it a day. Enjoy!

About me - I've been tagged

Tag

Hiya, all. I've been tagged, which is pretty fun! The always lovely Beauty 411 tagged me, so I will be answering the following six questions. Here are the rules:

* Post rules at the beginning of the post.
* Answer all the questions.
* Tag 6 people, and go to their blog and leave a comment to inform them that they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog.
* Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve posted your answer.

And so we begin...

What were you doing ten years ago?  I was working at the phone company, hating my job. When people would ask me what I did for a living, I would always reply "I sit at a computer, slowly dying."

What are five things on your to-do list today?

  1. Get shoes for me and Ara for my brother's wedding in two weeks (!).
  2. Get a decent bra - ostensibly for said wedding, but let's face it: I'll be doing everyone a favor. ;)
  3. Blog. I have so much to write! I'M SO BEHIND!
  4. Wash clothes so no one has to go to work without clean underpants next week, and clean up the house after apparent tornado swept through kitchen and family room.
  5. Check out the MAC Friends & Family discount at the MAC Store, and drop off my pro card application.

Snacks you enjoy?  I just enjoy snacks. I'm more a carb-y snacker rather than a salty snacker.

Places you've lived?  I grew up in Maryland with a brief hiatus in Virginia Beach. Now I'm in Richmond, VA. In my head, I live in New England.

What are 5 things you would do if you were a billionaire?

  1. GIVE SOME AWAY. Geez: "billionaire"? No one should be a billionaire.
  2. Get a jet and pilot. I don't love flying, but with millions I would fly anywhere and everywhere.
  3. Buy a home in Oaxaca, Mexico and one in Ireland.
  4. Send my parents to Italy for a vacation and buy them a new house if they wanted one.
  5. Start a cosmetics company that was eco-friendly and multi-skintone-friendly. Hip, but also classic.

People you want to know more about?  I have a friend who is an enigma to me most of the time, so that's who I'd like to know more about.

In the past, I haven't tagged other people because I didn't want to be annoying, but I'm going to go there this time. :) Hope you all don't mind... Tag, you're it: All Lacquered Up, Bit By the Beauty Bug, Mischo Beauty, Beauty Snob, Girl-Woman-Beauty-Brains, and Now Smell This.

Other times I've been tagged include: 6 unspectacular quirks and it's in the bag.

Let's go shopping

Let's go shopping...

I am in the mood to browse the hallowed halls of some of my favorite places to shop, and I thought I'd take you with me. Put on your comfy shoes and grab a cafe mocha and let's go!

First stop, my favorite: Armani!

  • Berry_blush_paletteLuminous Silk Foundation and Luminous Silk Powder. I'm nearly out of the former, and want to try the latter. If you haven't tried LSF, yet, and live near an Armani counter, ask for a sample. you'll fall in love! It's light, it's glowy but not overtly shimmery, and it's nice and long-lasting. LOVE.
  • The Berry Blush Palette is lovely, and I think I may "need" it. It's got two of Armani's lovely sheer blushes (one cream, one powder), stacked nice as you please.

FCH coverage of two of these products can be found here:  LSF, Luminous Silk Powder.

It's easy to rack up a big bill at Armani, so even thought I'm spending imaginary money I think it's best to move on. In my mind, the next store over is MAC, of course! I need nothing from the permanent collection. In fact, let's be honest: I don't need makeup. But I'm going to focus on the MAC Limited Edition items, here in my dream shopping world.

  • Well, let's start with the oldest collection and work our way up, shall we? How 'bout Dazzleglass, which I LOVE (make 'em perm, MACgods! make 'em perm!). I particularly love Pleasure Principle  and want a back-up. I'd also love to get my hands on another Funtabulous and Ms. Fizz.
  • I think I'll toss them in the Infra-orange trend bag, which is sleek and bright and happy-making.
  • Let's start cooling off with some Cool Heat! I need to pick up the following shades of Slimshines: Swelter, Tropic Glow and  and maybe even High 90s. To balance the spice on the lips, I need some soothing smoothness, courtesy of Solar White, Warm Chill, Cool Heat, and Climate Blue.

FCH coverage of these MAC collections can be found here:  Dazzleglass, Cool Heat.

I don't really care where I pick up the next few things, because there are loads of places that sell 'em. That's not hard at all - the hard part is picking only a few of these great shades:

Retro

  • That up there? That's the Retro Summer collection from OPI and think it's so hot it's smokin'. The peachy one, Peach-a-boo!, is so sweet and pretty, and the green one, Sit Under the Apple Tree, is crisp and fun.  I also like the looks of the pink, Calendar Girl. It looks so saucy!

And then I must saunter over to Sephora, or as I refer to it: Mecca. (no offense meant)

  • I need a few things from Make Up For Ever (MUFE), so let's start there. I'm in love with Aqua Eyes, which are truly no-budge, no-smudge eyeliners (even in the waterline --- WHAT!?). I have Mat Black 0L, so I think I need a bit of color. Shimmering Plum 4L and Blue with Green Highlights 12L seem like good starts, but Bronze 10L may accidentally go into the basket. Oops!
  • While I'm standing in front of the MUFE display, I need to grab the High Definition Mircrofinish Powder. There's just too much buzz about this product for me not to try it!
  • I need to pick up some more Yu-Be. Have you tried this stuff? This glycerin-based softener and hydrator is really nice. It's great for all of those scratchy, dry situations you may find yourself in over the summer!
  • Diorshow MascaraThis is the most embarrassing statement I've made as a beauty blogger/makeup artist since I admitted to not having had tried a Tweezerman Tweezer before, but here goes:  I have never used one of The Multiples from NARS. (!) I really want one and can't pick between Antibes and Copacabana. At $37 USD a pop, I can't afford to grab both in my real life, but in this fantasy shopping spree they both go in the basket! PS: I have since tried a Tweezerman, and they do rock. I'll review shortly.
  • I really have to try Diorshow. Really.

FCH posts about these products can be found here: Aqua Eyes, Tweezerman.

Fantasy shopping isn't fun unless you go grab handfuls at my favorites spots: Lush and BPAL. Check out the crazy list:

  • Lush
    • Charity Pot Hand And Body CreamsIt's hot. I feel gross. I want bath products: Karma soap, you will be mine! I love this smell: orange, patchouli, spice... it's perfection. Bohemian, you sound nice an lemony light, which is perfect for summer! I have never tried a shower jelly, and have never even been tempted until now. But because it's hot, I think I like the idea! I'm snatching up Sweetie Pie, because it's summer and berries are just the ticket to cool ya off.
    • I'm picking up a Charity Pot, for sure. That's a no-brainer. You can't beat the moisturizing goodness and the fragrance is great for this time of year. The only sticking point is which charity do I support? Sigh...
    • I'll also get another Dream Cream. This stuff is A.MA.ZING. The scent is nice, and fades fairly quickly anyway so even if you don't like it, you don't have to sweat it. But it's great at smoothing bumps and dry patches. I've never used anything that works this well! A.MA.ZING.
    • Sticky summer days and nights call for a dusting of Dusting Powder, and I'm grabbing some
more Silky Underwear (I'm obsessed) and getting Karma for the first time. Yum.
  • ugh
BPAL - note: this is a very abbreviated version of my BPAL wish-list!
    • I need a bottle of the following: O, Mama-ji, Morocco (I go through it like I breathe air!), and Kali.
    • I also want to try: Phantom Calliope, Al Azif, Miskatonic University, opium poppy, voodoo lilly, Othello.
    • From The Carnival Diabolique: PRIALA, THE HUMAN PHOENIX, L'HEURE VERTE, THE GRINDHOUSE, AERONWEN, AGRAT-BAT-MAHLAHT, ASHLULTUM, CLÉMENCE, CYTHEREA, DIONYSIA, EISHETH ZENUNIM
    • I'll also get a few bottles of TKO, because I love it and it's soothing and it's so, so gorgeous. And I'll also get a few bottles of TKO massage oil over at the Black Phoenix Trading Post, which is how I first fell for this scent. It makes me smile just thinking about it.
    • While I'm at Black Phoenix Trading Post, I'll also pick up a bottle of Ugh massage oil. If it's half as lovely as the TKO, I'll be happy and so will my achy fibro muscles!

FCH posts about Lush and BPAL are plentiful. Click the links for a list!

Bloggers gain credibility

Thumbs_up

Bloggers gain credibility in the beauty industry!

Rock on, man! Read this, straight from the industry guidebook that is Women's Wear Daily:

Beauty Bloggers Gain Credibility in Industry
MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — Beauty bloggers, once snubbed and now coveted by many of the beauty companies they adore, are on a bumpy evolutionary trek from detached commentators to industry insiders.

"They are like the QVC of this time," said Don Ressler, co-chief executive officer of Intelligent Beauty, owner of Redpoint Cosmetics and iQ Derma. "They have been really involved in the [beauty] space. They have really shown they have a voice."

At the Total Beauty Blogging Summit held partially at Intelligent Beauty’s headquarters here from May 16 to 18, the advantages and disadvantages of bloggers’ rising power were etched out. On the plus side for bloggers, much of the beauty apparatus is taking them seriously as formidable links to consumers, and a support system of bloggers and online networks has blossomed to foster their success.

On the downside, increasing competition has made it difficult for individual beauty bloggers to stand out. Bloggers complain about pesky publicists expecting coverage, and burgeoning media awareness has led to a perception that they’re swag addicts with trigger fingers for positive reviews.

Dangling on the precipice between fringe and mainstream is certainly a tricky place to be. Many beauty bloggers are making an effort to keep beauty companies at a distance since traditional media, they said, often gets too chummy with beauty firms.

The 45 bloggers at the summit were keenly aware that their currency is the authentic connections they have with readers. "We are liberated from the pressure of advertising. One of the great strengths that we all have is our editorial voice and the honesty we give readers," said Annie Tomlin, editor of Bella Sugar, speaking on a panel at the summit, which was arranged by Total Beauty, a Beverly Hills-based online resource for beauty product information with a network of some 125 bloggers.

Still, bloggers walk a tightrope trying to preserve their integrity and acquire information as beauty companies banking on the bonds they have with consumers court them. Christina Jones, who writes eBeautyDaily for b5media, has responded to the dilemma by cutting back on communicating with public relations representatives. "I hate that pressure," she said. "I don’t want to deal with them."

Julia Coney, founder of the All About the Pretty blog, suggested readers can tell the difference between a blogger with true affection for a brand and one that has succumbed to marketing, and will ultimately vote with their eyes. "I am not on Bobbi Brown’s p.r. list, and I don’t care if I ever get on it because I love her that much," she said. "Readers really know."

As the blogosphere matures, bloggers are sharpening their content and are sometimes shying away from covering products being sent to other bloggers to ensure variety. "Just because it is the hottest product, it doesn’t mean we are going to write about it," said Ellen Mirza, editor in chief of Lipstick Powder ‘n Paint. "We have to be passionate about it."

Readers and brands can better judge bloggers for themselves if there exists established codes of conduct. Kristen Giordani, senior editor of Total Beauty, advised summit attendees on product review guidelines. For example, she handed them an instruction sheet that outlined how skin care items should be tested for at least four weeks, makeup for five days, hair care for two weeks and body care for four weeks before a review.

"The sites and bloggers that do have ethical standards and communicate those are going to be looked at [more favorably] from readers and brands," said Emrah Kovacoglu, ceo of Total Beauty.

Review protocols make sense to Paul Baranda, who puts out Beyond Beauty Basics with his girlfriend. "Really what we want is for readers to come back and stay loyal….We want to be that person that teaches you what is hot out there and what is new, and give it an unbiased review," he said. However, he conceded, "There still seems to be somewhat of a lack of accountability in blogging. You don’t have to get two sources and all that stuff."

The questions confronting beauty bloggers are only due to mount as their numbers continue to climb, making it a complicated task for beauty brands to navigate the blogosphere that is home to hundreds if not thousands of blogs touching on beauty. "The brands have definitely understood by now the importance of bloggers in the success of their businesses, but it is difficult for them to figure out what to do," said Kovacoglu. "User-generated content is something that is scary to brands. They don’t know what is going to be said."

Fragmentation and diversity in the blogger universe makes it that much harder for brands to gauge what bloggers will write. At the summit, the bloggers spanned the racial spectrum; live in big cities, suburban enclaves and small towns; were members of the YouTube to Baby Boomer generations, and ranged from stay-at-home moms to successful professionals to former beauty editors.

Brands have coped with that diversity by basing their interaction with blogs on a blog’s traffic totals and reaching out to the most recognizable blogger personalities. Kovacoglu said that brands are paying serious attention to blogs that have 25,000 to 35,000 unique visitors monthly, but Baranda estimated p.r. agencies start contacting blogs once they’ve reached the roughly 3,000 monthly visitor mark.

How to boost traffic was a topic of great interest during the summit. Search engine optimization specialist Russ Smith told the group that celebrities remained leading attractions. Individual bloggers noted that their largest readerships were frequently for "how-to" posts. "Women want to learn how to do things properly," explained Tammy Gibson, the blogger behind A Mom in Red High Heels.

Regardless of traffic, Kovacoglu indicated brands are most comfortable with bloggers the likes of Shake Your Beauty’s Tia Williams, Jolie Nadine’s Nadine Haobsh and Jet Set Girls’ Anne Fritz, all of whom previously were found on magazine mastheads. Williams has been featured in Olay advertising, and Haobsh said she’s worked with Guthy-Renker on the infomercial company’s In An Instant skin care line.

Depending upon known blogging entities, though, can shut out brands to key niche consumers. As brands and bloggers become more sophisticated, they have a better grasp on audiences for blogs and what products appeal to them. Gibson said that there are currently a few brands "savvy enough" to approach her specifically for her audience, which largely consists of middle-class mothers 23- to 35-years-old.

Ressler said Intelligent Beauty would attempt to learn more from bloggers by soliciting their opinions and treating them akin to an "informal advisory board." "You get instant information in real time. You don’t have to wait for a magazine," he said. In addition, Total Beauty is launching a program called Sneak Peek later this year get products in the hands of beauty bloggers for them to review. "This is the first time we have had significant brand partnerships getting brands in front of bloggers," said Kovacoglu.

If the summit, where brands such as Kate Somerville, L’Oréal Paris, Anastasia Beverly Hills and Murad wooed bloggers with products and tours, is any hint, the assimilation of bloggers into the industry isn’t slowing. "We see that the Internet is very quickly changing the entire landscape of the beauty industry," said Adam Goldenberg, co-ceo of Intelligent Beauty Inc. "The beauty companies that get this and that embrace the Internet are going to be successful and the ones that don’t are going to be left behind."

Frédéric Fekkai is game. In a video clip shown at the summit, he confessed, "Actually, I wanted to be a blogger myself. Maybe I should start."

Fireworks - Shu Uemura's new collection HANA-BI

Fireworks!

Shu Uemura's HANA-BI collection

Shu_signature

June marks the 25th Anniversary of the opening of the first Shu Uemura boutique. The doors opened in the ritzy Omotesando area of Tokyo, June of 1983. Every single year, Shu Uemura creates a collection to celebrate the anniversary, and this year's collection is especially poignant coming months after the passing of Mr. Uemura.

HANA-BI, which means fireworks, which is apt for the lovely summer months. The name of the collection is a double-entendre of sorts, as the Japanese word HANA means flower and BI means beauty. The collection boasts product created with natural ingredients and packaging inspired by fireworks - perfect for summer!

The inspiration for the collection were three elements: terre/earth, flower/rose, and water/source.

The artwork for the packaging, which features a different burst of fireworks on item, was commissioned by Shu Uemura himself and created by Gwenael Nicolas, an industrial artist from Tokyo. Read more about Nicolas here.

Let's take a sneak peek, then you need to click on the link to keep reading past the jump!
