Tentatively back...

To my lovely readers,

Thanks for waiting for me! I have been felled not by the sagging economy but by morning sickness and pregnancy exhaustion that made me incapable of doing anything much other than sitting in a stupor. I'm starting to feel better and hopefully will be back to my normal posting pace soon.

You read that right, folks! We have another little one on the way here at Chez FCH.We're definitely excited, and our toddler can't wait to be a big sister! And this means I will start testing some mommy-centric beauty products (but don't worry - we won't go all the way into Mommy Land. ;)

Thanks for all of your well wishes and concern recently, and I hope to see you around here a lot as we move towards the holidays - which means tons of new makeup collections and news! So stay tuned!

Let's talk ANTM

America's Next Top Model - Cycle 11

425pxantm11

I'm going to try to write about ANTM this cycle, and here's the first installment. I'll do a brief recap of the current chicks and the two that have already been kicked to the curb eliminated. I will try not to be terribly snarky.

Next_top_model The first show, where they went from 30 to 14 was cheesy and trite. I couldn't even write about it. If you didn't see it, let me give you the recap: Tyra, J and Jay pretended they were "in the future" and the whole theme was vaguely robot-esque. It was inane. Oh, and the girls found out one of the contestants was born male (and still has his male bits). Cue the inappropriate, nasty comments and the fear and the bitchiness. Naturally, one of the other girls is a lesbian or is bisexual (she doesn't care to be labeled so we're not sure if she dates men or not). She has set her sites on "converting" another contestant. Oh, and because Tyra is who she is, she changed 2 of the contestant's names. (!) There were 3 Brittanys, so naturally we can't be trusted to keep them straight, right? Now one is McKey and one became Sharaun. The winner (?) got to keep her own name. WTF?

The second show, I missed most of due to a toddler who is afraid of the dark. I'll do better going forward!

The third show I'll recap after the jump.

Mostly, I just can't wait for the show this week, since it's the makeover show. That's always my favorite.

But first, let's get the overview...

The models

The_girlsThat's them, on the right. I'll do a quickie run down. Click the cut at the bottom of the page to skip forward if you want to bypass this roll call. And click each girl's name in this list below to see a full-sized picture on the CW network's ANTM page - keep checking back because they put the girls' shots of the week there each week.

  • Analeigh | So far, aside from having a very pretty name, she's not distinguished herself in any way, to me.  Her photos are good, but not stunning.  She looks a little like Michelle Trachtenberg to me (a compliment).Oh, and she was apparently nearly sold to a Saudi prince at some point. Bizarre.
  • Brittany | "The exotic one" - she's a beautiful mix of African American and Native American Indian.  She has a lot of potential, but her pictures are lackluster. And she's about as boring otherwise, too --- so far. Oh, but at least she got to keep her own name! She's out to prove that Vegas models don't all have to look cookie-cutter. Good luck, but she needs to step it up fast if she wants to do that, because she was described as "high end catalog" this past episode.
  • Clark | I'm voting against Clark ever since she said "I have always thought I was superior to other...people." I'm not sure what the hesitation was, but I'd love to know what she was about to say, since the end result was still nasty! She's a pretty girl, if a bit hard-edged. She's not actually superior when it comes to getting good shots, though, which makes me giggle.
  • Elina | Elina is cut from the same cloth as Angelina Jolie and Megan Fox, but with a Ukranian flair. She's stunning, and has a piercing gaze - set firmly on Clark! She's my pick for winner this cycle, though she may be egged on by Tyra to warm up a bit. She's got an agenda, too: she's vegan and an animal avtivist,
  • Hannah | Oh, Hannah. She's from small-town Alaska (no electricity, heat, or water in her home!) and has already  alienated a few of the girls by pushing Isis away from her in the hot tub, then referring to herself as a stereotypical whitr girl. She's now considered uptight and a racist (in my opinion the former may be true and the latter is a silly accusation).  I think she's fairly plain and her photos are awkward.
  • Cwantm11samanthacontainer_015221208 Isis | The pre-op transgender contestant was originally found by Tyra in the homeless shelter photoshoot in Cycle 10. She's got the couture posing down, but needs to make sure to soften her face at all times. She may do well, which would make me happy and piss off most of the other contestants and tons of conservatives. Oh well! She also needs to "look like a model" when she comes to panel, Tyra announced. She did look a bit tragic, but hell: they found her when she was living in a halfway house for homeless girls. I'm sure she's not been shopping Fashion Week lately.
  • Joslyn | Seems to have bonded with Tyra and the judges, but her pictures aren't proving out, yet. Has auditioned 30 times, so maybe that's why they all seem so comfy together? She's older than the other contestants, too, at the decrepit age of 23.
  • Lauren Brie | Odd cheese name, uninspiring blonde hair, decent photos, not too bright. Let's see what happens after a few verbal lashes from Tyra and a makeover. I'm holding back judgement until then, though her photoshoot yielded what was called "the best pictures in ANTM history" this past week.
  • Marjorie | Her French background can't help her be more interesting. That's sad. She's tall, lanky, and a ghostly shade of grey from the ends of her shaggy Agnyss Dean haircut to the tips of her toees. She makes me yawn, but got the best picture award on the first show. Hmm. Does she remind anyone else of the spacy Harry Potter character Luna Lovegood?
  • Cwantm11marjoriecontainer_013771b6e Brittany S. McKey |She's got what I refer to as "Crayola red hair." It won't last long, since Tyra and the gang don't like it. I'm just hoping they don't take her too dark - it's going to wash her out. She was doing great in the most recent episode - an excellent job with poses. Too bad she changes to the next pose so quickly the photographer can't catch 'em. I like McKey because she's an MMA fighter and ring girl. Sweet!
  • Nikeysha | This girl should have known she was on the chopping block when she was reprimanded for interrupting the judges. Tyra doesn't play that! Oh, she also got chastized by the entire judging panel for being too skinny. I hope she goes home and has a sammich. Oh, and if you missed her announcing that she had to pee before the shoot, you missed some real klass.
  • Samantha | At this point, she's fairly non-descript to me, though she's photographing decently. I don't know that her IQ is the highest on the show, but it's modeling not physics. However, she insists she wants to put her own stamp on the industry, yet seems to been unable to articulate how... and possibly doesn't know what "the industry" means.
  • Cwantm11elinacontainer_015172c6fc0c Brittany B. ShaRaun | When asked to wow the judges during one-on-one interviews, she simply told each judge she was "America's Next Top Model." No, she's not... she was voted off in the 1st elimination. Ta-ta!
  • Sheena | GHETTO-FABULOUS Kimora knockoff from Harlem, who keeps getting warned by Mr. Jay for being "too hoochie." Shocking accusation for a go-go dancer! Ms. J referred to her at one point as "Victoria's Secreations." She actually seems fairly nice and has a great dose of personality, which is a good change considering the rest of this cycle's contestants. I like her - now let's just see if she can keep the fake boobs restrained a bit so Tyra doesn't vote her out and banish her to Maxim-land. Oh, and maybe she has learned her lesson and won't display expensive handbags between her legs in the next shoot...

Next week, makeovers. I promise a more punctual review!

I'm Blogging for Invisible Chronic Illness Week

Do you know anyone with an invisible illness?

I'm fairly certain you do...

08ii_animatedlogo260

Not all disease is apparent to the naked eye. Some are, of course, and they've got their own stigma because of it, but people who are faced with an "invisible illness" have their own separate issues to face. The first kind is what National Invisible Chronic Illness Awareness Week is all about. This week was a push to raise awareness and as an effort to show folks suffering from these illnesses that other people are out there who "get it." The fact is, 96% of illness is invisible (according to the Census bureau), and nearly 1 in 2 people live with a chronic illness. Astounding!

Note: I'm a bit late - we were asked to post this on the 8th, since the awareness week ends tomorrow. I'm sorry. Please see the sites anyway and get info and whatever else you can take away!

Are you the 1 in 2?

If not, take a look to the right or the left on your family tree or sitting on the bus next to you, and odds are you'll find the 1 in 2.

08ii_bloggingforiiweekbutton

Let's talk about what invisible illnesses are. Any illness that doesn't speak for itself when someone takes a look at you is invisible. So: diabetes (all types), high blood pressure, addictions, PCOS, depression, heart disease, anxiety, cancer, AIDS, asthma, arthritis, lupus... you get the point, I think. Sadly, the list goes on and on and on.

Speaking of lists:

Bernie Mac was the picture of health in most of our eyes... that is, until he passed away from complications from pneumonia, probably related to his ongoing struggle with sarcoidosis, an invisible illness. No one was laughing when another funny man dropped dead and stunned the world; John Ritter didn't even know he had a defect in his heart, 130034shirleytemplepostersthat's how invisible that problem was. Brooke Shields and Marie Osmond have spoken bravely about their problems with postpartum depression. Princess Diana apparently struggled with depression and eating disorders. Heath Ledger died of an accidental overdose of his insomnia medicine; he also suffered from depression and addiction. Pete Wentz has shared that he Adam_and_the_ants_5 his bipolar disorder, as do/did Adam Ant, Beethoven, Tim Burton, Lord Byron, Carrie Fisher, Larry Flynt, Macy Gray, Peter Gabriel, Connie Francis, Ralph Waldo Emerson, DMX, Robert Downey, Jr, Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill, Richard Dreyfus, and, I suspect, Britney Spears. Jim Carrey has fought depression and so has J.K. Rowling. Bob Marley is riding high on the big stage in the sky after a fatal case of melanoma. The following women are breast cancer surviJimcarrey_1vors: Edie Falco, Chritina Applegate, Olivia Newton John (who has also fought depression), Shaft's Richard Roundtree (yes, men get breast cancer), Suzanne Somers, Shirley Temple Black,  Cheryl Crow. Men who are survivors of protate cancer include Robert de Niro, Joe Torre, Nelson Mandela, Colin Powell, and Rudy Giuliani. Thyroids can go wonky and/or become cancerous - just ask Oprah, Rod Stewart, Pam_anderson Roger Ebert, Catherine Bell, Kelly Osbourne, Kim Catrall, former President George Bush and his wife Martha, Gail Devers and Linda Ronstadt. Ronald Regan had cancer twice and then Alz-hBobmarleyeimer's Disease - all of which are invisible illnesses. Lance Armstrong was given a 2% chance to survive his testicular cancer - but we know how well that turned out, thank goodness. Hepatitis: Naomi Judd, Pamela Anderson Lee, Larry Hagman, Mickey Mantle, Ken Kesey. Lupus: Seal. Eating disorders: Carrie Otis, Catherine Bell, gymnast Cathy Rigby, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Britney Spears, Alanis Morisette, Amy Winehouse (who is also a cutter and addict), Kate Beckinsale, Portia di Rossi and many, many more.  You see... some of these you might never have guessed. INVISIBLE.

My story

Why do I care about Invisible Chronic Illness Week? Well, shouldn't we all? I can name someone in my real life - as opposed to celebrities - with almost all of the disease mentioned above, and then some. But I'm not outing any of them here. I'll out myself, instead.

I have an ongoing battle with two invisible illnesses: fibromyalgia and depression. Oh, and I also firmly believe I had some learning disabilities, too, but I'm kinda past them at this point. It can be debated that my two chronic illnesses are related. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? In fact, I suspect they are unrelated at all, at least in their origin. I have no idea for sure, nor do I care. What I care about is having as healthy a day as possible, each and every day.

Most of you have heard of depression, but many of you may not have heard about fibro - or maybe you've gotten some bad information. Let me sum it up as concisely as I can, though I'm bad at concise (maybe my other invisible illness is Talks Too Much-itis?).

Fibromyalgia

What we know:

  • Fibromyalgia is a syndrome, which means it's a collection of symptoms that often appear together, but aren't all necessary to have a diagnosis.
  • It's chronic, which means it will run a long-term course. It may go away, or be in "remission" but it will probably come back. Or maybe not.
  • It's not degenerative, which means that it's not going to kill me, nor will it destroy my bones, joints, or tissues.
  • With fibro, some pains come and go. What hurts today may be forgotten in the haze of tomorrow's pain.
  • Because it's not destructive to the cells in the body, it's not officially considered a "disease" but I think most people shrug off disorders that aren't classified as diseases, so I use the term anyway.
  • It's not "in your head"; it's not caused by being overly sensitive, neurotic, or hyprochondraic. It's a real disorder with real life consequences for people who have it. And for those that live with us!
  • Fibromyalgics feel pain longer than other people and stronger than other people. In tests, a "normal" is poked with a pin and a "fibromite" is poked with a pin. The "normal" moves on from the pain much faster than the person with fibro, and also rates the pain as less intense. The fibromite may still feel significant pain in the site the next day!

What we think we know:

  • Fibromyalgia may be an autoimmune disorder (like lupus, scleroderma, and possibly MS).
  • Fibromyalgia seems to impact the central nervous system (CNS), specifically pain receptors/nerves.
  • It ebbs and flows and seems to respond negatively to stress.
  • We think new medicines may be making some sufferers feel better - but not others.
  • It's related to sleep. Or maybe it's not. It's another case of chicken or the egg, I'm afraid. Do we sleep poorly because of the pain? Or are we in pain because we don't sleep soundly? Whichever it is, it's a fact that most fibromyalgics have disturbed sleep.

What I know for sure:

Every day, I wake up in pain. Have you ever been to the doctor or a hospital and been given that pain assessment chart? You know the one: rate your pain on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high) or circle the asinine smiley face that represents your pain level. Well, when asked, I'm usually ripping into an 8 or so at any given time. Other times it gets bad.

Am I wimpy? I don't think so. I have had some more serious pain situations in the past and I think I've handled them fairly well. I feel like my good days have me as a match to many other women my age. I consider myself to be quite tough, and so do many people I know. If you want to know a secret: I think I'm tougher than most people, because of the pain I put up with constantly. But shhh... don't tell anyone that. Let them think they're the strong ones! ;)

I'm a lucky fibromite, actually. I have a lot of pain, but none of the chemical sensitivities that many other sufferers deal with. I know women who can be floored by a week of migraines from sniffing the wrong cleaning product while they grocery shopped. THAT SUCKS. My joints hurt, but I don't have trouble with my joints hurting so badly I need a cane or a wheelchair; some sufferers do. I'm not stuck in bed because the alternative is too unbearably painful or exhausting, though some people feel that's all they can accomplish each day.

I have, however, had my days where taking a shower was the most activity I could muster. Those days, I have needed a nap to recover from the bathing before I could go make a sandwhich - which would then prompt another nap. I have had days where lifting a magazine was too much, which was just as well because my brain just couldn't comprehend the deep thoughts in People, anyway.

Did I mention that cogntive problems are part of fibromyalgia? I probably forgot. (that's a fibro joke - get it? cognitive problems... forgetfullness.... HA!) In fact, Fibro Frog, the name of my blog, came from a discussion with another fibromite when we were discussing the typical symptom of "brain fog" or "fibro fog". She mistyped it, and Fibro Frog was born. Now, when I have one of those ditzy times, or moments when I have aphasia (can't remember a word), I think "ribbit!" and it makes me feel just a bit better.

Also common are muscle weakness, sleep disturbances, and clumsiness. Check, check, and check! It's really easy to tell when I'm getting "a flare" because I start dropping things or knocking them over (more than usual). And then I start napping fiercely.

So that's just a little rundown of one invisible illness. My hope is that this post makes someone feel a little more like someone "gets" them. If you want, send me an email or post a comment and share your story. Meanwhile, I need to go try to get some sleep!

What you can do

Not sick: I don't speak for everyone with a chronic illness, but I have heard others say this so I'm confident I'm not the only one thinking it. The best things you can do for people with invisible chronic illnesses is listen and be patient. You can listen when they need to vent or share fears, or listen to them tell you they don't want to talk about it. Both are helpful. You can listen when someone says "no" to another bite of cake or going out for drinks because you don't know the reason they declined and you could cause serious problems by "pushing". You can listen when someone asks you not to baby or coddle them, but you can also listen for a cry for help! You can be patient with the friend who cancels at the last minute - even if you don't know of any health problems, they may be there. You can be patient with a person who walks slower than you do - you never know why that is (though he may just be a slow walker!). You don't have to be a doormat, and you shouldn't let people harm themselves or others. But in most cases, just try to be patient and give people the space to be sick and the time to get healthier. Listen. Be patient. And thank you!

Sick:

I don't want to preach, but I have noticed some things that sick people need to think about. If you don't want to read them, skip 'em.

  1. Try not to take things out on other people, and try to be as positive as you can. Those are my rules. Am I always successful? No. But the better I am at those two things, the happier my family and friends (and coworkers, and customers) are. And frankly, following these two rules make me feel happier, too.
  2. It's also super important to listen to other people - you want them to listen to you, right? Well, when the doctor told me not to crawl into bed for days on end when I was feeling sick, I didn't want to listen. Finally, I took a walk. Then another one. Then a longer one. Within days I was feeling much better. Sitting on the couch and laying around in bed make my fibro worse. Maybe you're different, or maybe you're not. Just try to listen to people who have gone through what you're going through and try to really take in their suggestions. (I still have recommendations I'm actively ignoring, so I'm not standing on a pedestal shaking my finger at you - trust me!)
  3. Say thank you. To the person you canceled on, to the person who lifted your bag, to the doctor who did that extra test she didn't want to do, to the store that delivered, to the person who backed off when you asked him to.
  4. Be grateful for the things you can do. Maybe you can't walk around the block today, but you sat and knitted for 20 minutes and it made you happy. Say "thank you" to the universe. You enjoyed dinner! You snuggled your kitty. You walked through the garden. You ran a marathon. Be grateful!
  5. Talk or write or pray if you need to. Or don't.
  6. Please try not to make it about you all of the time. It gets old. Can you whine? Yes - to the appropriate people, at the appropriate times, and for an appropriate amount of time. Seeing glazed eyes? People not returning your calls? Just catch a sigh? Is body language causing feet to point for the door? You've overstayed your welcome on that subject! Move on, or call your support group. Is that harsh? Yes. But not everyone wants to hear about your health 24/7.
  7. Try to be positive. Yes, I said that in #1, but it's so important I wanted to say it again. In my case, I can fall back on "it won't kill me" but unfortunately not everyone can say that. But there has to be something positive to say, right? Even if it's just to compliment the nurse who is helping you -  a simple "nice socks!" will do. Staying positive makes it easier. Don't believe me? See #2!

Please give a hug to that 1 of 2, or to yourself if you're the one! I "get it"...

If one of those things had been done wrong, the whole look would have been ruined. But it wasn't wrong, and therefore Anne is, again: PERFECTION!

Anne's makeup:

  • Matte foundation
  • Fill in the brows with powder
  • Eyes - a matte brown on the lid, neutral shadow above crease to brows; with brown-black liner top and bottom with a slight flip to the liner on the outer corner of the top lid; black mascara.
  • Blush with a russet tone on the apples of the cheeks
  • Pink-brown lipstick with a drop of gloss

I went to the Maryland Renaissance Festival

And these are the things I saw...

Have you been to a Renaissance Festival, before? I missed the Maryland Renn Fest last year, but it's a happy tradition for me and my best friend, Angela. This year, husbands in-tow, we hustled over to the amazing festival grounds and scoped out the scene. We had a blast, but there were some ups and downs when it came to costuming and makeup. Let's take a looksee...

Renn_2

This is "Mother Goose", or... something. At no point when we saw her was she doing anything but sitting in this chair.

Trust me, the makeup was exactly the same color as the curling ribbon used in the jewelry.

Actually, this lady was super nice. We chatted for a few minutes while waiting for one of our party to catch up after grabbing a last-minute turkey leg.

Renn_9

Loved this guy! He had some sort of... er... weasel act or something. Or was it dead rats? Whatever. Who cares!? His makeup rocked, and his outfit was awesome. And he didn't smell as much as you'd think....

Renn_1a

Renn_1OK, I had to black bar this "lady" for her protection, but I waffled about that decision for quite awhile because I think she should be outed and shamed. Maybe it will prevent her from wearing it again. I doubt it as much as I doubt that this outfit has never been other places besides Renn Fest. This has "really seedy backwaters bar" written all over it.

Please... it's best to click and see the pictures in their full-sized glory.

Shirtless Thursday!

There's nothing wrong with a little T&A

I know what you're thinking:

  1. "Shirtless Thursday" doesn't really flow. OK, well I'll use alliteration better when there's a day of the week that starts with "Sh-". Don't worry - the following post will be well worth it.
  2. T&A on a beauty blog? Are you pandering to us, now? Yes.

On to the gratuitous beauty.

Josh Holloway for Davidoff Cool Water...

I'm not really sure what else needs to be said.

Matthew Fox for L'Oreal Men Expert

Sawyer isn't the only one we'll see more of, so don't feel Lost without Jack! Matthew Fox will be lending his special brand of hotness to L'Oreal Paris's Men Expert line.

“I'm thrilled to be working with L'Oréal Paris. I really appreciate the innovative and high-performance nature of the brand, as well as its values of open mindedness and diversity.
L’Oréal Paris offers women - and now men - throughout the world care products at the leading edge of technology,”

Brad Pitt and Kiehl's - together they will save the world

Brad Pitt (that's him on the right, in case you're not familiar) and Kieh'ls have paired to create Aloe Vera Biodegradable Liquid Body Cleanser, which is the company's first 100% eco-friendly product + packaging combo.

Pitt won't be the spokesmodel, sadly. He has written a note placed on the bottle and 100% of the net profits will go to JPF Eco Systems. This orgnaization was created by Pitt and Kiehl's to support global environmental initiatives.

"Kiehl's formulated this product to minimize the impact we have on our environment. All proceeds will go to benefit green initiatives around the globe."

David Cook for Skechers

http://www.drewmelbourne.com/images/DavidCook.jpgI think we all know I enjoy me some David Cook. What? I'm not embarrassed! Neither is Skechers, who signed him on as the first male spokesmodel the company has had since 2002, when it was none other than my one true love, Robert "Iron Man" Downey, Jr. (see, since I mentioned him, I have to put up his picture, right? right.) Expect to see the ads for the Cook-Skechers deal this fall.

Josh Hartnett for Emporio Armani Diamonds

Lg_vin_diamonds_men_v3_2

He's not really my type, but he's still cute and this is for you ladies who like him. Hartnett will be the new face of Emporio Armani Diamonds for Men. It's probably in the stores now.

Armani's quote: "The Emporio Armani generation is inspired by film and music. I felt that for the men's Diamond fragrance, it would therefore be appropriate to involve one of today's most inspiring young actors... Both on and off screen, [Harnett] has a charm and charisma that is magnetic. His individuality, allure and nonchalant way of being are all qualities which inspired me in the creation of this new fragrance."

Got any more eye candy for us?

Cute Quiz

Many thanks and apologies for whichever of my blogging buddies brought this to my attention. Thanks, because I think it's cute and hysterically accurate, and apologies for the fact that I closed out Google Reader before I made note of the blog - and now I've forgotten who mentioned it. :(

The quiz is a neat little personality identifier sponsored by SparkNotes. It only took me a minute or two to complete, and hopefully it doesn't resort in too much spam because my spam filter is already worn out with all of my UK lottery winnings and friends from Africa who need money. Anyway, the test is oddly correct when it comes to pinpointing my personality - how 'bout yours!?

PS: My favorite questions, just to give you an idea of how this unconventional little test goes, were these:

18 Suppose a girlfriend or boyfriend that you were really into said one day, "You and me just aren't right for each other," and dumped you right there.

Did you notice the poor grammar?

40 Aren't babies incredibly special?

Y/N

49 Do you best express yourself...

orally
anally

(Dominant Introverted Abstract Feeler)

You are an ARTIST (DIAF)— creative, adventurous, and deep. Although you are an introvert, your dominant ideas lead you to assert yourself often— especially through your work. You actively put your creativity to constructive use, and because you are ruled by your heart you are less likely to be inhibited by logic.

You have an intuitive understanding of emotion and know how evoke it in others, but the real world can be a prison of foolishness and embarrassment if you don't get your head out of the clouds a little more. Also, you are 87% likely to write poetry. Please, for the love of God, stop now.

[Editor'sNote: I am an artist - I was an art major in college and fancy myself a painter, now. Of course I'm also employed as a makeup artist at the moment, too. And no one has ever accused me of not being assertive! Hmmm... This is also true: logic rarely gets in my way. I laugh in its face! For the record, I rarely write poetry; instead, I have a blog. I'm going back to my prison of foolishness and embarrassment now... thanks for reading!]

Beauty Updates

Newsflash

You know here at FCH, we search for beauty news so you don't have to - and here's the latest:

  • The Makeup Divas have identified a new product that you may be interested in if you like all-natural beauty  (which we do!). Check out Buddha Balm and other goodies, by Karma Creatives, which is soy-based and organic and reminds me of the little pots of lipglosses I used to use in the 70's. Normally, things that remind me of the 70s are not as pleasant as this. ;)

  • Mark_jacobs Check out the PHE.NOM.E.NAL images of one of my favorites, Marc Jacobs, posing as another of my favorites, Andy Warhol, in Interview magazine (one of my favorites as well, and founded by Warhol, actually). The photoshoot occurred for a tribute issue of Interview celebrating what would have been Warhol's 80th birthday. Read other posts at FCH relating to Andy Warhol here and here. And if you haven't picked up an issue of Interview before, you're missing out  (check out their artsy but readable website, too!)

  • Kat Von D's makeup line has hit Sephora's virtual and brick-and-mortar floors, and by some accounts it's actually good! Because you hang on my every word, you already knew this was coming, and so you are not surprised a tattoo artist has her own makeup line and anyone actually cares. The line includes two eyeshadow palettes (with 8 shades each, one set being blues and one more neutral tones), a black liquid eyeliner, a red lipstick, and a set of brushes. Apparently to look like Kat Von D, one doesn't need blush? Prices run from $16 to $28 USD. If you've tried this set or have seen in in person ('cause I hear the packaging is luxe!), let us know in the comments. PS: my girl-crush on Kat is over, but I'm still interested in the makeup - that's how I roll.

  • It's Skin Cancer Awareness Month (May, that is), and many groups are working to increase awareness of this disease that actually kills someone almost hourly - but unnecessarily.  Did you know if skin cancers are detected and treated early, they are almost 100% curable? That makes it ridiculous to not get screened! One in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer at some point in their lives, and over 1 million new skin cancers will be diagnosed each year - why not go have someone look at that spot you've been wondering about? Or get someone to do an all-over body check? (you can't really think you've accurately examined your own scalp, do you?) Put your sunscreen on, amigo, and start doing some research into where you can get your free screening, sponsored by Olay and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), in June and July. Simply visit these sites ( SkinCancerTakesFriends.org or ASDS.net) to see what dermatologists in your area are participating and get over there and get checked! In case you weren't paying attention I will repeat: Did you know if skin cancers are detected and treated early, they are almost 100% curable?

  • La_mer_the_creme That sound you just heard? That was Jennifer Lopez sighing in relief. Thankfully, you no longer need to worry about running out of your beloved Creme de la Mer (whew!). The company is now offering an auto-replenishment system in which you can automatically get your La Mer products shipped to you and have the small price of the product automatically deducted from your charge card every 30, 45, 60, 75, 90 or 120 days. Kinda cool that you'll get a "Warning" email 1 week prior to the shipment so you aren't caught unawares, and you also get a deluxe sample with each replenishment. Sweet. Check it out here.
FCH posts about La Mer abound, but here are the reviews.

And that's about it, besides all of the newest releases, which I will tell you about in a separate post. Do you have any news for us?

Natural Beauty Remedies for Earth Day!

I thought that maybe we'd be interested in sharing some natural beauty remedies or homemade products for Earth Day. Easy ways to save the earth and look pretty while doing it...

Natural_skincare
  1. Got dingy nails? Slice a lemon in half and squoosh your fingers into it for 5 or 6 minutes. Voila! Healthy and white nails!
  2. Try some masks:
    1. Oily skin? Smear on some milk of magnesia, then rinse it off once it's dry.
    2. Normal or combination skin? Make breakfast: crack an egg into a bowl, mix in a handful of oatmeal, and a bit of olive oil (a teaspoon or thereabouts). Stir it up 'til it's smooth, sploosh it onto your face for 20 minutes, then rinse it off.
    3. Dry skin? Honey and olive oil, swirled together and smoothed onto the skin will take care of that - leave it on for 15 minutes then rinse it off. If you need follow-up, gently pat a bit of olive oil on the face - and it's also good for cleansing, believe it or not!
  3. I love the aspirin mask! Have you tried this before? If not, you're missing it. Take some non-coated generic aspirin, put them in the palm of your hand, drip some warm water in until you have a paste. The paste can be scrubbed into the skin for a bit, or just placed on the face and left to dry. Rinse off. Voila! The salicylic acid cleans the pores nicely, and evens the skin making it appear a bit brighter. Sweet! If you feel like this is a bit drying, or just hate the powdery residue as it dries, mix the aspirin with honey or olive oil. I personally put it on as a mask, then wet it down a bit and scrub before rinsing.
  4. Tea Tree Oil is great for minor cuts, acne spots, minor nail fungus or itchy spots (but if these things don't go away after a few days see your doctor!).
  5. Dry skin? Try jojoba oil. It's eerily similar to human sebum (skin oils) so it's fabulous to clean the face, moisturize the skin, and act as a carrier for scented oils (make your own massage oil!).
  6. Avocados, mooshed with some yogurt, are fabulous for the skin or hair! For skin, let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse. For hair, wait the same amount of time before shampooing and conditioning as usual.

What are your homemade beauty remedies!?

Oh, and happy Earth Day!

And now, the news...

I have been a not-so-diligent poster in the past few weeks, and for that I apologize. I am hoping that the family's health is stabilized and the work situation is evening out, and that I am a much more prolific blogger. For now, let's catch up on the news together:

  • Planning on ordering from Elizabeth Arden online for the first time? They're celebrating the reopening of their flagship store in NY and you benefit! Get a free 1oz 5th Avenue fragrance with any order of $50 or more by entering in the code CELEBRATE at checkout.
  • Speaking of Elizabeth Arden, their new Summer collection has launched! It's called Bronze and it's really pretty. It includes a great little fold-up palette with 4 limited edition eyeshadows and a bronzer/blush duo; 3 lipsticks that are a preview of the new lipstick formula with a to-be-announced-later launch date; a bronzing mousse (it's nice!); a powder bronzer compact; and two gel liners (black and bronze). A review of the collection is coming soon.
  • Vanishing Varnish! What happens when enterprising and clever girls are banned from wearing nail polish at school? Why, they invent a polish that appears almost non-existent inside, but reacts to ultraviolet light outside and turns into a visible color! What a cool idea - I can't wait for it to hit the market. Sign me up to test drive it! Source. Thanks for the heads-up .
  • No stranger to cosmetics for a cause, Lush has a new UK product that's politically driven - £2.75 gets you Guantánamo Garden, an orange Bath Bomb colored to represent the jumpsuits worn by detainees at the US's controversial Guantánamo Bay base. The Bath Bomb was created to support closure of the base and it releases a picture of two detainees when it dissolves in water (regardless of how you feel about Guantánamo Bay's base, that's fairly nifty!). Proceeds benefit Reprieve, a group who "campaigns for legal representation for Guantánamo prisoners and for those in US prisons facing the death penalty." The bath bomb is orange, jasmine and chocolate-y goodness and is emblazoned with a white dove.  Source
  • MAC's Dazzleglass promo pic has surfaced in multiple spots. Take a look, then read up on the collection here. Source

  • Besame Cosmetics has dramatically reduced the price of some of their products to make room for "new and exciting" items coming soon. Swing by the site to see the discounts on items like Cashmere Powder Compact, Masterliner Eye Pencils, Loose Powder, Lip Glazes,  Rose Lotion, Alluring Shadows, and Boudoir Rouge. (Some other items are already sold out, so not listed here)
  • Bumble and Bumble recently introduced a new hairspray developed backstage - it's incredibly flexible and quick-drying, due to "intelligent polymers" that help hold almost any style. Take a look at Bumble and Bumble's spray de MODE. Thanks Blogdorf Goodman for the heads-up.
  • Here are some great beauty tips from Allure magazine and Allure.com (please try to ignore the fact that the editors didn't catch that the page is quite vividly mislabeled as the April 2007 issue):
    • Green tea as a topical antioxidant is only effective if it's made up of 50 percent polyphenols. How to tell if yours has what it takes? The cream or serum will be brown.
    • If you want to experiment with bangs, first try a side-swept style rather than a blunt cut. This flatters most face shapes and is easiest to grow out.
    • To prevent split ends, blow-dry hair when it's damp (not wet) and add two or three drops of silicone serum to the ends.

  • Angelina Jolie has made a new ad for Shiseido, and here it is:
