Thought I'd share some great things I've found online lately...

• Veteran swatcher extraordinaire KarlaSugar at The Next Best Thing To Going Shopping Yourself reviews Urban Decay's 24/7 Lip Liners, and muses over the point of lipliner. I love the Urban Decay 24/7 Eye Liners, so I was glad to see this review and check out the corresponding lip product. 

• Now Smell This covers the opening of the first ever Elizabeth W boutique. If you haven't tried Elizabeth W, you should. They were my first niche fragrance company, and the scents are pretty awesome.

• Makeup Makes Me Happy covers a new hair dryer that curls your hair while it dries. Don't think "poodle" think beachy waves! I think I like this, and may have to check it out!

• Beaut.ie covers the next in the wave of retro comic-inspired makeup collections/collaborations. We've had Barbie (twice!), Smurfs, Hello Kitty, and who-knows-who-else. Next up: Mr. Men!

• Musings of a Muse found some great Jackson Pollock-inspired eye shadow palettes at, of all places, Urban Outfitters. Since I'm awed and inspired by Jackson Pollock, I'm completely enamored of these little shadows!

• STRANGE post: I have been sitting here, staring at this article, not sure what to do with the information inside. I'll let you take a look at the gothic kittens.

• Another odd post: apparently a new plastic surgery trend has begun: getting fixed up for your own funeral. That's right: posthumous plastic surgery. Um... that's taking vanity to a whole 'nother level!

• And last, for some "strange beauty". This is Elaine Davidson. She has 6,005 piercings, 1,500 of which are internal. YIKES! If you'd like to check the source to read more, please be warned: strong language is used.

Make-Up Artist magazine is now accepting student competition applications for the 2009 Los Angeles International Make-Up Artist Trade Show. For this year's beauty/fantasy competition, the Gothic theme refers to the gothic beauty palettes that appeared in recent runway shows (the emphasis is on creating a pretty, rather than scary, gothic look).

The character/prosthetic competition theme, X-Men Mutants, pays tribute to Mike Elizalde, a keynote speaker for this year's London IMATS and a Los Angeles-based make-up designer who worked on X-Men: The Last Stand.

The competition is open to students of a recognized make-up school and to those who graduated 12 months prior to the competition. Make-Up Artist will only accept competition entries postmarked by May 22, 2009.

Eight competitors will be selected for each competition. Cash and/or prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners for each competition.

Fashion Week and The Oscars have just passed, and they leave in their wake a bunch of new nail trends we'll be seeing and trying in 2009. And we've seen a lot of news from other bloggers, too, which must be recapped! This will be a jampacked issue of New in Nails!

• Again, Scrangie. She's made me want these pretty colors and chunky glitter polishes, despite the fact that the glitters are completely silly and not at all age-appropriate. She's magic, that girl. She should be hired by the nail polish companies to create lemmings. At any rate, here are some Nicole by OPI colors she picked out for Valentine's Day. Naturally, they're not on the Nicole website, so I'll have to scrounge around for them at the stores around town. GRR! • Essie waved the starter flag for Mercedez Benz Fashion Week to give us two hot shades. "Blacker Series" and "Palladium Silver" are tributes to the launch of the Benz SL65 AMG Black Series, and the shades were "only available in the gift bags". HA! GlamBlush lets us in on the big secret, though - Essie's Licorice is  "Blacker Series" and Essie's Loophole is  "Palladium Silver", so you can still grab em and hit the roads... • All Lacquered Up shows us that the car theme wasn't just an Essie thing. Butter London created a color exclusively for the Vena Cava show, but if you love it don't worry: it will be released in the Fall! However, a new trend for Fall is matte nails, so you'll want to read the story over at All Lacquered Up to find out how this color, seen below, was tweaked to fit the trend. • Scrangie, though under-the-weather, is still posting (what at trouper!). She shares some quickie swatches of Nicole by OPI's new Spring collection. I know I love the glass fleck polishes from China Glaze (my favorite polish company), and I'm truly lemming a silver or platinum polish. But I don't think I'm going to rock the black-and-white nail - at least I am having a hard time figuring out how it will fit into my Library-Storytime-and-Playgroup lifestyle! ;)

Rock the dark lip / nail trend while you wait for Spring! | Chanel Les Noirs Mythiques

I got a head's up on this collection from Allure's blog: Beauty Reporter, and I'm glad I saw it. Take a look at three LE lipsticks and 3 LE nail lacquers (!) from Chanel.

Coco Chanel loved her some black, and this collection pays tribute to her favorite color. The collection is called Les Noirs de Chanel, and as the name suggests the products are all shades of black.

For lips, we have Obscure which is brown-black (think dark chocolate), Maniac which is red-black, and Hysteria which is violet-black. For nails we can rock darkness in Rouge Noir, red-black); Vendetta, violet-black; or Madness, chocolate-black.

NARS Cosmetics was backstage creating the makeup look for Marchesa’s Autumn/Winter 2009 show.

TREND | Wild brows, matte skin

 

Inspiration  | Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig created their Fall 2009 collection with fairytales in mind.  To highlight this theme, Talia Shobrook created a whimsical look from her vision of a naughty aristocrat running out of a party, “like a young girl going into the woods wearing a gorgeous ball gown, putting on makeup rather naively,” she explained.

 

Look  | Wild brows atop flawless skin was the focus of the look.  “I used a dash of Madrague brown shadow and went right into the inner corners of the brows,” said Talia.  To capture the look of a tousled young girl, the brows were brushed in an unnatural direction. Beneath the brows was a colored lid of matte white, as if applied in a fleeting moment by a true makeup novice.  Soft lips complemented the perfect skin.   

 

 

Below is a step-by-step to recreate the look:

 

• Face |  Lightly exfoliate and smooth skin with NARSskin Hydrating Freshening Lotion;    Moisturize with NARSskin Aqua Gel Hydrator; Use NARS Sheer Glow Foundation (NEW for Fall 2009) in the center of the face and buff out for a neutral base;Apply NARS Concealer generously, to cover any imperfections; Apply NARS Loose Powder for matte finish

• Eyes |Apply NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Kilimanjaro (icy yellow and icy blue sides) to entire lid, all the way to the brow, in a block shape, not blending; Apply NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Madrague (cream side) on top; Dash of the brown in NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Madrague (caramel side) into the inner top corners of the brows, pushing the hair in opposite directions; Curl lashes with NARS Eyelash Curler; Coat top lashes with NARS Larger than Life Volumizing Mascara in Black (NEW for Fall 2009)

•  Lips |Massage light layer of NARS Lip Lacquer in Chelsea Girls; Apply a bit of NARS Concealer to center of lip for matte look

"I wanted the whole thing to be like a fairy tale," explained Marchesa's designer, Georgina Chapman. "I wanted to have fantasy."

Love these clothes, and they surely are fairy tale-like, but wearable, too!

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week: NARS facecharts for Philip Lim

 

NARS Cosmetics was backstage creating the makeup look for 3.1 phillip lim’s Autumn/Winter 2009 show.

LEAD ARTIST | Ayako, International Makeup Director, NARS Cosmetics

TREND | Wispy lashes, translucent matte skin

 

Inspiration | The Fall 2009 collection took inspiration from the mythical spirit of rock and roll, while the hair and makeup was created to emulate Tao Okamoto’s look, a Japanese model in Phillip Lim’s Fall 2009 collection. Fused together, Phillip wanted the makeup look to mirror Tao’s mod style with a touch of rock n’ roll.  With this in mind, Ayako created a look centered around “poetic mod-rock.” 

 

Look | False lashes were placed on the outer half of the bottom lash line and was the central focus of the look.  For an exaggerated effect, matte charcoal shadow was used with a wet eyeliner brush to draw lashes beneath, as if to create a shadow effect.  “This is the poetic part of the look,” said Ayako.  As a complement to the wispy lashes, shimmering pink and gold shadows covered the lids, while the lips were muted with concealer.  Skin was made flawless with the newly formulated sheer matte foundation (NEW for Fall 2009) to counteract the sleepy look of the lengthy bottom lashes.  Atop the matte skin, a gentle sweep of shimmer was added to cheekbones to catch the light.

 

 

Below is a step-by-step to recreate the look:

•  Face | Apply NARS Concealer generously, to cover any imperfections;   Use a small amount of NARS Sheer Matte Foundation (NEW for Fall 2009) to create even, beautiful skin; ·         With NARS Yachiyo Brush, dust NARS Single Eyeshadow in Bombshell from apple of cheeks up to temples for a light shimmer without pigment
  

• Eyes |Line lower lashes with NARS Glittler Pencil in Danceteria, Smudge with finger to bring out gold shine;    Use NARS Eye Contour Brush to layer rose gold with golden flecks side of NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Silk Road  (NEW for Fall 2009) over Danceteria;   Apply frosted champagne side of NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Indian Summer (NEW for Fall 2009) over entire lid, blending up to brow;  Cut a set of false eyelashes in half and apply to outer half of lower lash line;·         Apply NARS Larger than Life Volumizing Mascara (NEW for Fall 2009) to lower lashes;  Wet NARS Liquid Eyeliner Brush and apply matte charcoal side of NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Brumes (NEW for Fall 2009), drawing lash shadows on outer half of lower lash line

•  Lips |  Apply a generous amount of NARS Concelear to entire lip

LEAD ARTIST | Diane Kendal for NARS Cosmetics

TREND | Smoky eyes

INSPIRATION | The collection took inspiration from the 1940’s, reflecting the surrealist images of photographer Lee Miller. Combined with a bit of 80’s rock and roll glam, makeup artist Diane Kendal created a strong look without being too girly.

LOOK | “The look is all about the eyes with soft matte lips for contrast,” said Diane Kendal. To bring strength to the face, Diane focused on creating smoky eyes and full brows, while downplaying the lips and keeping skin fresh with a light brushing of blush for a healthy glow.

Below is a step-by-step to recreate the look:

• Face | Use NARSskin Hydrating Moisture Cream to moisturize entire face · Apply NARS Concealer as needed, to cover any imperfections · Use a minimal amount of NARS Sheer Glow Foundation (NEW for Fall 2009) · Lightly stroke NARS Blush in Gilda on the apples of the cheeks
• Eyes | Use NARS Eyeliner Pencil in Mambo to line upper lashes and crease · Blend over entire lid and up to brows, keeping dense color by lashline · With Mambo, line lower lashes and gently blend · Use NARS Single Eyeshadow in Bali to fill in brows · Draw a very thin line on upper lashes with NARS Eyeliner Stylo in Black (NEW for Fall 2009) · Curl lashes with NARS Eyelash Curler
• Lips | Apply NARS Lip Therapy Treatment in Rain to entire lip · Lightly pat a small amount of NARS Concealer over Rain to take down color

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week: Guests use makeup artists, too!

Jessica Stroup, from the new 90210, hit Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, but made sure she looked her best by getting some help from theBalm makeup artist, Felicia Roman.

How did Felicia create this look?

 

1-    Pick-Up-Liners in Don Juan were smudged around the lashes and in a thicker line covering most of the bottom part of the lid to achieve smoky definition. Because the Pick Up Liners are half the size of a typical pencil, Felicia was able to get up close and really push the liner into the base of the lashes with perfect precision.

 

2-    Felicia dabbed ShadyLady Eye Shadow in Luscious Lani across the lid to highlight the symmetrical shape of her face and then finished it off with a light dusting of the sheer 100% mineral  Overshadows in “You Buy, I’ll Fly” – a copper shimmer-  to  make Stroup’s eyes POP.  This powder was also blended into the lower lash line over the pencil for an ethereal finish. The lashes were defined and volumized with 3 coats of Two Timer Mascara- two to instantly build fuller lashes and a third to separate and lengthen.

 

3-    To even out skintone and smooth her skin, Felicia blended BalmShelter Tinted Moisturizer with TimeBalm Concealer.  TimeBalm Concealer has time released hydrating properties, so there was no need to reapply between shows- the under eye area stayed bright all day. SexyMama translucent powder gave a photo-finish, and then a combo of the matte Bahama Mama bronzer with the more shimmering berry toned Hot Mama blush gave a healthy glow to the cheeks.

 

4-     Roman conditioned and nourished Stroup’s lips with theBalm to the Rescue, and then topped them off with either BalmShelter Lip Gloss in Girly-Girl (for a pinky finish) or Plump Your Pucker in Cocoa My Coconut (a warm nude)  to add some shimmer. Jessica LOVED the yummy flavors of the glosses, especially Cocoa My Coconut which she wore for the Jill Stuart show.

MAC Collection: Colour Ready | 4.2.09

Colour Ready. It's a repromote of a few items, and a release of some new Perm items. So who can complain, right!? I love the "new-perm" collections, because even if they're squoze in between some other great collections, I feel like I can wait 'til the time ($) is better. Don't you?

By the by, the powder is getting rave reviews from makeup artists who have been testing it for a few seasons. Sounds promising...

Well, enough chatter. Here's the scoop, as always to be updated when I get more info!

Richie Rich, formerly of Heatherette, struck out on a solo path and debuted his first collection sans Traver Rains. (Remember the Heatherette collection for MAC, by the way?)

Rich described his collection to WWD, who reported:

"…ruffled silk chiffon and silk charmeuse dresses, gaudy lip prints, Keith Haring-inspired graphics and season-defying swimsuits in what Rich calls a 'happy palette' of hot pink, neon yellow and robin’s egg blue. (For the more subdued scenester, there are some head-to-toe black looks.) The show will also be the debut of sneakers Rich designed in collaboration with Vans, to be sold for holiday 2009."

So his collection hits Fashion Week, right, and who does he choose to be the celebrity face of the catwalk? Pamela Anderson.

Granted, on roller skates or not, Richie Rich is a personality in his own right, campy and over-the-top. But did he need to be upstaged by the (drunken?) (high?) (something!?) flaming hot mess that was Pam?
