In which The Ninja contemplates nasal mucus (China Glaze: Bogie from Vintage Vixen)

The Ninja can only imagine the conversation at China Glaze headquarters (which she pictures as being a giant castle full of magicians and cool bubbling vats of color):

Magician: We made a new smoky plum shade.
Bottle Namer: Sounds perfect for that new collection coming out in the Fall!
Magician: Um... whatever.
Bottle Namer: The whole collection has a random vintage theme that's not terribly clear-cut, so we can throw anything at it as long as the color is Fall-ish. Now, if only I could come up with a name...
Magician: Whatever, dude. *wipes paint off of hands onto pants*
Bottle Namer: Bogie!
Magician: Whatev--- Wait. What? Like a booger?
Bottle Namer: Huh? Ew, gross. No! Like Bogie and Becall. You're nasty.
Magicial: Um... that's what we call it in England.
Bottle Namer: We're not in England. No one will notice. Trust me.

Regardless, Bogie is a sultry, dusky plum shade with eensey amethyst microshimmer and maybe some eensier silver. Very gorgeous, very easy to apply, very opaque in two glorious coats.

Bye bye Aromaleigh

No!!!!! My weeping can probably be heard from wherever you are. BSB favorite Aromaleigh has called it quits.

I'm really sad, because I love the owner, Miss K, and I think that the shadows she's been producing for the last 12 years are probably the most beautiful I've seen.

And that's saying a lot.

I wish Miss K the best in everything she does in the future. I know this wasn't an easy decision.

I also hope maybe one day she'll take a stab at this again-- or gives me her recipes! ;)

In which The Ninja looks like a cool grandma (China Glaze: Hey Doll from Vintage Vixen)

Maybe The Ninja is predisposed to liking this shade because Mr. Ninja calls her "Doll"? Whatever the reason, and despite the incredibly odd shade that is harder to pin down than Jell-o (yum!), she's mad for this color.

Hey Doll, yet another piece of the China Glaze Vintage Vixen collection debuting late this Summer, is billed as "rose frost with shimmer". Really, is The Ninja completely confused as to the description of a "frost"? Because this doesn't seem like one.

So... what description would The Ninja give this polish? That's a hard one. Rose, yes, but dusky. Dusky enough that while she was applying it, she thought she might have accidentally grabbed a warm caramel-ish shade. It's somehow a rose-bronze-caramel-mauve. How's that for clearing things up?! The shimmer is not as overt as in some of the other colors in the collection, and is not of that "almost-foil" style. In fact, the shimmer seems to be multi-colored (rose? silver? a bit of copper or gold?) and quite "micro".

Rose, but not grandmother-rose. Or maybe a cool grandma.

Swatches are two coats, which applied quite smoothly. No pooling-in-the-cuticles issues here.

The Ninja has nothing else like this shade (though her stash is not nearly as large as some others') and likes it because it's unique. Like a custom-blended Jell-o.

In which The Ninja finds a new favorite dark blue polish! (China Glaze- Midnight Mission from Vintage Vixen)

The Ninja has long found dark blues like indigo and navy to be among her favorites in her collection. Especially blues that shimmer. Luckily, this one is worthy of joining the others!

Midnight Mission: "navy blue frost with silver micro glitter". As with many of the other shades in the China Glaze Vintage Vixen collection, the "silver micro glitter" is that nearly-foil type of size and shape, though not nearly enough is present in this color to make it a foil polish. The polish clearly has these silver particles, but no other shimmer seems to be present. It's more of an almost-sueded polish than a shimmer; certainly not "lit-from-within", but that makes it unique and interesting!

This blue is nearly navy (navy technically being nearly-black), but not quite. And it's glorious! This should be fairly universally-flattering, as most dark blues are. While painting this polish on, The Ninja kept thinking of those denim products that have a bit of shimmer (not that The Ninja would be caught dead in them, but she did encounter them in the 90's).

Application was a breeze (shown is two coats but it's possible one would have been enough if done carefully).

This polish will stain cuticles, so go slowly when painting and protect the skin around your nails with oil and sweep away from the cuticles when removing!

Pop of color (blue!) with 2 shades from Aromaleigh's Victoria's Revenge collection

I love a bright splash of color, especially in the Summer. Don't you? One of the easiest ways to get the look is to put a neutral shade all over the lid and then sweep a bold color under the lower lashline. Minimal mascara tops it off. 

This looks nice on just about everyone, but is especially pleasant for small eyes, hooded eyes, or Asian-shaped eyes.

Because of the shape of my eye (somewhat down-turned), I did place a bit of dark black-brown liner on the outer 1/3 of the top lid, angled slightly upwards, to give the impression the eye was not quite so droopy. I usually do this when I'm trying a lower-lashline emphasis. Again, that's particular to my eye shape and not necessary or even recommended for other eye shapes.

Products used:

Aromaleigh Infernal Chaos: Immaculate dove grey with the softest sheen and brown tones... to match the gloves you wear to ensure that you leave no fingerprints.
Yeah, well what I see is a very-close-to-skintone shade for me with the slightest touch of grey. In fact, it's more of an opalescent-nude. It would make a great highlight for people with darker skin than me, but I love it on the lid like this. Subtly brightening!

Aromaleigh Frigid Gloom: One glove lost, the snow and ice advances, along with the setting sun. Her delicate smile turns icy blue, yet ironically her bouquet of carnations and freesia are pink with life's essence. It's a cold night.
More gloves? LOL. This one is a soft cool blue with bits of pink and small multi-colored shimmer. It's quite an impressive color. It kind of reminds me of hydrangeas! Love this shade.

Both shadows were applied with a dampened brush. On the lid, I used a flat shadow brush; on the lower lashline, I used a pencil brush.

Other products used:

A skintone pencil for the lower waterline (actually a nude lip pencil I use exclusively for this purpose).
Mascara (black)
A black brown liner (optional) (I mixed two satin pencils with a liner brush, then applied: a dark brown and a black)

Illamasqua Temper is surprisingly wearable orange lipgloss (perfect for Summer!)

"Bright tangerine" is not a color I usually put on my face. It's not even a color I wear in clothes. I'm sure The Nail Ninja could recommend a few tangerine polishes I'd use, and the shade is great for pops of color in decorating... but there's no way I'd be able to pull-off tangerine (especially of the "bright" variety) on my lips.

Right?

Wrong.

Somehow this gloss, in Illamasqua's Intense Lipgloss gloss formula, works - and it doesn't even make my teeth look dingy or yellow. Temper is not for the faint of heart. Or maybe it is! Maybe we all need to choose a few shades for our alter ego and really rock 'em. I'd never have picked this for myself, and yet I adore it. I can't wait to wear it on my vacation with a black sundress I just picked up. (I am quite fair- the black dress and tangerine gloss should really accent that! I like confusing the tan people.)

Some tips for wearing this ultra-pigmented, uber-glossy, delightfully non-sticky lipgloss formula: While the applicator is amazing, it's best for filling in the full parts of the lip. You may want to try a lipbrush to line the margins of the lips if you don't have a pencil that coordinates with the gloss shade. While we're talking about pencils, you may want to try one. In my quick swatches, below, you'll see that this would have helped greatly in making the look seem more polished. Luckily, this didn't ruin my morning of dishes, laundry, and toy-sorting. Also, you can apply this a bit more sheerly if you're careful, but it's hard to get it even. If you want to try to tone-down the gloss factor, I'd suggest filling in the lips with a lipstick or pencil first, then topping with a bit of gloss.

Now that I've finally embraced this lipgloss shade and formula (I've had mine for months and just eyed it nervously from time to time) I fully intend to dive into more Intense Lipglosses. Maybe Femme (coral pink), Frenzy (fuchsia), Fume (rose red), Move (muted thistle pink) or Petulant (magenta pink)?

In which The Ninja wears a blurple. (China Glaze: First Class Ticket from Vintage Vixen)

Is it blue with a tinge of purple? Is it purple with a touch of blue?  No one knows. Hence the invention of the word "blurple".

China Glaze's First Class Ticket is a perfect example of "blurple" and it's a pretty one at that. CG describes the shade as "deep purple frost with shimmer". Indeed. Or deep blue frost with shimmer. The Ninja does not want to continue to beat that horse. It's dead.

In the sun, as you'll see in many of the pictures below, this color sings! It indeed seems a bit more purple with some royal blue shimmer, though the images will give you a good understanding of how this color can look so different in different lights and at different angles.

As with the other colors in this collection: "frost"? Notsomuch. There are some almost-foil-style glitters in this color, but there are not enough to push this into the foil genre (some of the others in this collection are more so). There are also some glitters that are super-fine and seem to be that glorious "reflects" type glitter The Ninja has been seeing lately-- they're really light-catchy and sparklishous.

If you have debated getting a blurple before, this would be a good one to grab. It's probably dupe-able in overall color, but The Ninja suspects there is no other blurple with this lovely of a shimmer-load.

Swatches are two runny-thick* coats. Warning: this one will pool in the cuticles if allowed and there it will stain.

*That whole Big 3-Free style consistency that is somehow really viscous and really gloppy at the same time.

Get your paws on this!

Love these! If you don't have a Tweezerman tweezer, now's a perfect time to pick one up. I have one of these mini-slant version (shown above, but mine's pink), and they work great. Confession: I keep a mini-slant in my purse to attack those crazy little hairs I only notice in the rearview mirror. Also shown in the picture above are Matchbox Itty Bitty Paw Print Files, which are awesomely portable and marked with the same pawprint pattern found on the tweezers.

My new favorite strap-on

Please keep your mind out of the gutter. Strap-on bra clips.

They're perfect for corralling runaway bra straps, especially -but not exclusively- on racerback tanks and dresses.

 
The visible bra strap trend came (regrettably) and is now gone (thankfully). It's not cute to show your lingerie at the same time you're wearing your clothes.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but was really pleasantly surprised. I'm fairly well-endowed, and wasn't sure the clips were going to hold. And they did. Sure, I had to do a strange little dance and wiggle to get the things clipped on the back, but once in place they stayed put. I like that you can slide them up or down to get just the right situation.

I also liked how they gave a bit of "oomph" in the cleavage department. This was, for me, not an uplifting experience, which is great because if my girls get lifted too high, I can't breathe. Instead, this was more of a front-and-center thing, and it really improved my silhouette. 

Each package has 4 clips, two clear and two black. Two are the style you see in the picture above, and the other two are more round. I found the round ones easier to work with.

In which The Ninja becomes a Foxy lady (China Glaze: Foxy from Vintage Vixens)

The Ninja usually swatches in a system of sorts. She starts with the colors she thinks she's least likely to enjoy, working towards what looks to be the gem of the collection. This is easy in some collections where there's an obvious clunker or a shade The Ninja suspects will look particularly craptastic on her skin. There are other collections where none of the shades look sketchy, but one must prioritize anyway. So, while Foxy looked pretty in the bottle, since it's a "warm" shade (or so The Ninja thought), and these usually are less flattering on her, she decided to swatch it early in the Vintage Vixen collection.

Foxy is no clunker.

A fall red with gold (maybe copper? maybe a little of both?) microshimmer. In the bottle, this shade looked warm, meaning it appeared to be a bit orange-red to The Ninja. Not so! In reality, it's a deep wine-red. China Glaze says "burgundy frost with shimmer". The Ninja would not call this a frost, by the way. The polish brings to mind swirling fall leaves and certainly the image of a gorgeous ruddy fox and, perhaps inexplicably, a caramel apple. Maybe that's just The Ninja, though.

These swatches are two coats, both of which applied beautifully (not nearly as thickly as Classic Camel and Emerald Fitzgerald). The first few shots in the slideshow below are taken in indirect light. The rest are taken in the sun, so you can see the gold/copper (?) shimmer. The last shot shows how easily this color appears to morph (it doesn't really change- just seems to) depending on the light --- it's compared the definitely burgundy Ninjamobile, about a foot away from the other shots.

Again, a definite "Win" from this collection and a shade that The Ninja will be wearing again and again.

In which The Ninja falls in love with a color that makes her look terrible (China Glaze: Classic Camel from Vintage Vixen)

Fall means a lot of different things to a lot of different folks. The Ninja uses Autumn's crisp air as an opportunity to wear some polishes that look like colors found in her spice jars. What? Ninjas cook! How do you think they eat? It's not like ninjas can afford chefs at home all of the time. I mean, with all of the travel, it's hard to predict when she's going to be home, anyway, so how do you keep a staff? Are they just supposed to sit there and twiddle their chef thumbs while ninja business is being conducted? C'mon, people: focus.

AT ANY RATE, this shade from China Glaze's Vintage Vixen is called Classic Camel. The Ninja has never really met a classic camel, but who is she to argue with the geniuses at China Glaze? Please enjoy The Ninja's travel photo (above) from a recent mission. This camel was anything but classic, but kind and helpful all the same.

Classic Camel (the polish) is descibed as"khaki creme with gold micro glitter". It resembles ground mustard. Or maybe that perfect vintage suede jacket. It was, like Emerald Fitzgerald, goopy on first coat, but all was forgiven when the second coat went on. The color is odd, rich, and gorgeous; the shimmer is resplendent but subdued (if that makes sense), and the end result is terrible on The Ninja's skin*. She will still wear it, though. Yes, she will. She has never seen a color quite like this one, and it's gorgeous.

especially if you're medium-to-dark complected.

In which The Nail Ninja finally understands the polish addicts' love of green polish. (China Glaze: Emerald Fitzgerald from Vintage Vixen)

The Ninja has long scratched her head (with impeccably mani'd fingers, natch) over the general madness nail polish addicts express when confronted with a green nail polish. Sure, she's sported some blue-green tips (too boring).  She has worn acid green on her toes (too yellow). She has plunked on a neon lime (too lime). She's even worn China Glaze's Emerald Sparkle (jawdroppingly gorgeous but too bright for ninjas). She's done her part. But she has never swooned over a green. At no point has she ever understood the frenzy.

Until today.

Now, The Ninja adds the ever-elusive, discontinued Cult Classic NARS Zulu to her wishlist (ha! yeah- like she'll be able to track down one of those!). Image below courtesy of Scrangie - click to see its glory.

ANYWAY...

Behold the reason The Ninja's tune has change: China Glaze Emerald Fitzgerald (from the upcoming fall collection Vintage Vixen). She's a stunner! Described as "turquoise green frost with shimmer" by China Glaze, The Ninja would actually use the words "dark blue-green with emerald green shimmer".

Anticipating that she wouldn't like the shade on herself, she only swatched this and didn't do a proper mani. Now she is a sad ninja. As soon as the rest of the collection is swatched, this baby is going back on! 

The only issue, and it was minor, that the formula for this shade is either a bit thick and goopy, or the bottle got too warm during it's shipment here. Or it could be the fault of the humidity here in Ninja Headquarters. The first coat went on quite thickly and The Ninja was worried. The second coat was better, and after a coat of Poshe topcoat everything looked fab.

The product creates a fine mesh over the stretched lips and then stays put! Put it on over flacid lips and you're going to see peeling, pilling and general nastiness. Warning: this lipstick is not going to survive super oily foods, nor should you top it with any other gloss (aside from the one on the opposite end of the wand) - they degrade the quality of the lipstick bond.
