About this blog
Beauty School Blog is actually the third name for a blog started in Winter 2007. We were originally "Beauty Blitz", but a fabulous beauty editor named Polly Blitzer had, unbeknownst to us, started a beauty website with the same name, a playoff on her last name. It's a great site, and we of course decided to accommodate her request to change our name. Fifty-Cent Head was the new blog name for quite awhile, but we just weren't getting the number of hits we thought we should, and thought that perhaps our blog name was a bit too obscure (it was from a quote "Beauty isn't worth thinking about. You don't want a fifty-dollar haircut on a fifty-cent head. ~Garrison Keillor]. So... we decided it was important to use a name that identified us as what we were: a beauty blog that focuses on teaching women (and the occasional man) how to apply makeup. And so we became Beauty School Blog - now just shortened to BSB.
Anyway, as the name evolved, so has the blog, which now boasts about 1,000 hits a day (500-600 are "unique" visitors). Our readers are from all over the globe, but many of them are from North America, Qatar and the Philippines, with a fair amount visiting from Australia and the UK.
Our focus: educating "real women" in the ways of makeup and its application. It's really that simple! We do chat a lot about trends and new products, but with each day we carve more of a niche out of what we really like: opening dialog with women about how they can look their best!
FAQ
- What are your credentials? Why should anyone care what you have to say about makeup!?
I'm actually a working makeup artist in the MD, DC and VA market. I am trained in beauty makeup, and am in the process of expanding my repertoire to include more fashion-oriented and edgy makeup by seeking out apprenticeships with other artists. I hope to add special effects into the mix in the next year or so. I am, for what it's worth, MAC Certified, as well.
Additionally, I am completely addicted to cosmetics and makeup. I absorbed everything and everything I could get my hands on about it from an early age, snapping up almost every beauty magazine I could afford!
I also consider my education in art to be a really helpful component of my talent as a makeup artist. Pairing my background as an artist with talents for communication and teaching makes working as a makeup artist and beauty writer a natural choice!
- What are your favorite brands?
As a former MAC artist, I have to admit I still adore the line though some of the bloom is off the rose for me. I also love NARS blushes and lipglosses, and think Lancome is a company to watch (again). Clarins makes amazing skincare, as does Chanel. I wish I could afford more Armani! And my newest loves are Illamasaqua an OCC, though I'm increasingly drawn to mineral companies like Fyrinnae and Aromaleigh because of their amazing eyeshadow color mixtures. - What brands do you dislike or consider overrated?
I don't see the appeal of Trish McEvoy, to be honest. The packaging (little portable "notebooks" is clever, but the makeup is too darn expensive). I also think Estee Lauder makeup is fairly ordinary and slightly old-fashioned. I used to work with Elizabeth Arden cosmetics and skincare, and what a yawn that makeup line is! And they haven't got a clue what real skincolors are, or they just don't care to make products for women with dark skin. Either way, it's irresponsible and terrible.
- What is your must-have product?
Undereye concealer! I love Bobbi Brown's Corrector best of all.
- What's your best makeup tip?
Definitely it's to use primers. Under eye makeup, under foundation, under lipstick and under mascara. Primers are a must-have!
- Lipstick or lipgloss?
I love them both and also like layering them, but if I had to pick one formula for the rest of time it would definitely be lipgloss. - Why do you do so many neutral/boring makeup looks?
I think a lot of the bloggers or YouTubers focus on out-doing each other with "crazy" looks or bold shades. Even when they aren't rainbows of color, they are full of so many steps I don't think the average makeup user can follow them. I am leaning more towards focusing on "basics" for those consumers!
