A doggone easy Smoky Eye thanks to NARS Dogon eyeshadow duo! (review, pictures, swatches)

I have a crazy affection for smoky eye looks. I also have a mad love for taupe shadows. Hullo, how did I think I'd escape the lure of NARS Dogon, a taupe and charcoal eye shadow duo that came out for this Summer.

Smoky eyes for Summer? Ah, who cares? I love this palette. I will use the hell out of it!

On the left, a taupe. But what a taupe! It's a little tan-leaning (rather than grey), with an incredible duotone. The greenish nuance really adds bounce, light, and appeal! Similar to MAC Club? Nope, not really. But I will say if you like Club, you'll probably like this color.

The "charcoal" is a slightly blue-green black. Smooth. Pigmented. So very incredibly easy to build-up.

I've worn this duo a zillion ways. Above is one easy one: the dark shade on the lid, the taupe above and through the crease. The charcoal makes an excellent liner, smudgy accent, and crease color, too. The taupe works with myriad other shadows (well, the charcoal does, too!). I've used the taupe alone; as a liner for lighter, matte neutrals; and as an accent in the inner corner. It builds dimension and interest easily - try tapping it over browns, greys, black, greens... anything!

Definitely an A+ shadow duo. Have you tried it?

NARS Summer 2011 - really pretty!

NARS is a solid brand from a great makeup artist. It consistently cranks out well-made products. If I have one beef with the line, it's a minor one: their collections are often a jumble of colors!

The NARS Summer '12 collection is surprisingly cohesive though! The Exotic Dance and Dogon eyeshadow duos (white and beige shimmers & silver-lavender and navy, respectively) are great companions to the shadow trio, Cap Ferrat (tropical teals and blues). I'm not quite sure how the green-yellow glitter liner, Queen, fits in, though...

The collection's lip products offer something for everyone. Go trendy coral with Wonder lipgloss or go with a warmer and softer version of 2012's hot color (ORANGE!!) with yellow-pink Mayflower lipstick. Pink lovers can opt for Bolero Velvet Matte Lip Pencil: warm, light and bright. Fuchsia fans like myself should give Carthage Pure Matte Lipstick a shot.

Take these awesome Greek Isles shades and run with them. Just make sure your gladiator sandals let your Kismet gold polish shine! Crisp summer white Ecume will keep your mani looking polished.

There's also a new blush called New Order. NARS makes amazing blushes! It's a cool, soft pink with visible cool sparkle.

New from NARS: Pure Matte Lipstick

Maybe I was born for another era? Or maybe I should adopt some kind of retro look. Either way, I must confess: I adore a matte lip.

NARS* knows how I feel, I guess, which must be why they created their newest formula of lipstick: Pure Matte. What's more amazing than that? I mean, really: what better way to be both exquisitely modern and gloriously retro all at once?

It's important to know that these are only sold at Saks, so don't bother looking for them elsewhere!

There are six highly-pigmented shades, and all are packed with antioxidants and moisturizing ingredients, which is a surefire win when making a matte formula. I have high hopes for the Wild Mango Butter in this lipstick - it's usually really hydrating.

The shades: Volga (Deep Aubergine), Bangkok (Soft Rose), Tonkin (Cinnamon Plum), Terre De Feu (Black Cherry), Tashkent (Nude Beige), Vesuvio (Full Bodied Red)

Have you slipped by Saks to pick one up, yet? Do you run from matte, or towards it? And why is Saks always out of stock in the things I'm interested in?!

NARS: Strawberry Fields (lip gloss)- product pictures, swatches and review

 

I have a handful of NARS* lipglosses, and while they're all pretty, they're also all pretty sheer. Not Strawberry Fields, though, which is part of the Fall collection inspired by Daphne Guinness. This "strawberry" shade packs a real (fruit) punch!

NARS - Strawberry Fields
Color:  While  the product name contains "strawberry", a better descriptive is "rasberry". I suppose technically this is a cream lipgloss, since it has no shimmer. The shade is nearly-opaque, but I was able to build it to full opacity.
Application: Creamy, with no scent  that I can discern. It goes on smoothly with no streaks or  patchiness. Definitely not tacky or  slippery: it's somewhere in between those and quite comfortable to wear.
Wear: I got about 3 hours, and it only half-faded by the end of a sandwich. (That's a very scientific technique: The Turkey Sammich test.)
Price: $24
Notes: I strongly recommend a lip pencil with this gloss, because even though it's not slippery and doesn't migrate, it's intense enough of a color that it needs to be put on fairly precisely. It is also excellent over lipsticks!

Also in the Fall '10 collection: Doucer Blush (soft pink-brown); Daphne, Mangrove, and Coconut Grove eyeshadows (deep blue-violet; yellow-lime; and chocolate-taupe, respectively); Rouge Basque lipstick (brick red); Palladium Soft Touch Shadow Pencil (sparkling turquoise); and eyeshadow duos in Tzarine (platinum gold with silver reflects +  steel grey) and Rajasthan (glazed almond and cool charcoal).

NARS Vintage Polish coming to a fingernail near you?

Officially, NARS doesn't have anything to say (yet) about their Vintage Nail Collection for Fall '10, but I've spotted a few tidbits here and there. I can't tell you prices (though usually BNAS polishes are $16) but I was told October 1st is the date we can expect to see them in the US.

• I'm kinda lemming Philosophy's Field of Flowers set, so if you're getting me a Mother's Day gift, that may be a place to start. :)
  
  The set, which is only $35, includes the body lotion (8oz) and perfume (2 oz), though you can get a few other versions of this lovely peony scent, too. 

• Not a huge Laura Mercier person. What I should say, really, is that I haven't tried a lot from her line. However, I do know that her body products are a-maz-ing! We used to run from the MAC counter over to Laura's and dip our hands in the delicious lotions and then sniff ourselves for hours. :) I haven't tried Crème de Pistache, have you? It's the scent of pistachio nuts plus almond, praline and hazelnut "nuances" and freshly whipped cream. Um... yeah. Now, what's the most fun? The Honey Bath, the Souffle Body Creme, or the Body Scrub?
  
• Where are my Bond No. 9 fans? Gimme a "WOOT!" There's a new one coming out and it's another in the  Andy Warhol series. I don't have to tell you that I love the Warhol scents soooo much! This one is inspired by Montauk, Long Island. Four of Warhol's iconic Sunset series will dress the trademark star-shaped bottles. Expect this one to be good! Debuts Memorial Day, but I've got a sample coming and a review pending!
  
   

• Got sensitive skin? I do, at times. One of the lines that is closest to my heart, Patricia Wexler, MD, has created a line for the sensitive-skinned among us. It's called Anti-Aging for Sensitive Skin. That kind of says it all, doesn't it?
  The line includes a Gentle Exfoliating Peel ($34.50); MMPi20 Comforting & Renewing Serum, which will decrease reactivity while diminishing the signs of aging ($55); Calming Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 30 ($39.50); and Soothing & Renewing Night Cream ($39.50). Can't wait to try it, especially the peel - I can get away with a lot of moisturizers and serums, but not exfoliators!

• Check out these sleek Mattene/Slimshine-like lippies! They're new from NARS and are called Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment. These shiny, sheer, subtly tinted balms are packed with Wild Mango Butter, Vitamin E, Polar Berries and Açai Oil and come in six shades: Aurore (seashell pink), Greta (mauve), Paloma (cantaloupe), Lara (pastel pink), Angélique (strawberry) and Bianca (pearl). Inspiration  | Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig created their Fall 2009 collection with fairytales in mind.  To highlight this theme, Talia Shobrook created a whimsical look from her vision of a naughty aristocrat running out of a party, “like a young girl going into the woods wearing a gorgeous ball gown, putting on makeup rather naively,” she explained.

 

Look  | Wild brows atop flawless skin was the focus of the look.  “I used a dash of Madrague brown shadow and went right into the inner corners of the brows,” said Talia.  To capture the look of a tousled young girl, the brows were brushed in an unnatural direction. Beneath the brows was a colored lid of matte white, as if applied in a fleeting moment by a true makeup novice.  Soft lips complemented the perfect skin.   

 

 

Below is a step-by-step to recreate the look:

 

• Face |  Lightly exfoliate and smooth skin with NARSskin Hydrating Freshening Lotion;    Moisturize with NARSskin Aqua Gel Hydrator; Use NARS Sheer Glow Foundation (NEW for Fall 2009) in the center of the face and buff out for a neutral base;Apply NARS Concealer generously, to cover any imperfections; Apply NARS Loose Powder for matte finish

•  Lips |Massage light layer of NARS Lip Lacquer in Chelsea Girls; Apply a bit of NARS Concealer to center of lip for matte look

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week: NARS facecharts for Philip Lim

 

NARS Cosmetics was backstage creating the makeup look for 3.1 phillip lim’s Autumn/Winter 2009 show.

LEAD ARTIST | Ayako, International Makeup Director, NARS Cosmetics

TREND | Wispy lashes, translucent matte skin

 

Inspiration | The Fall 2009 collection took inspiration from the mythical spirit of rock and roll, while the hair and makeup was created to emulate Tao Okamoto’s look, a Japanese model in Phillip Lim’s Fall 2009 collection. Fused together, Phillip wanted the makeup look to mirror Tao’s mod style with a touch of rock n’ roll.  With this in mind, Ayako created a look centered around “poetic mod-rock.” 

 

Look | False lashes were placed on the outer half of the bottom lash line and was the central focus of the look.  For an exaggerated effect, matte charcoal shadow was used with a wet eyeliner brush to draw lashes beneath, as if to create a shadow effect.  “This is the poetic part of the look,” said Ayako.  As a complement to the wispy lashes, shimmering pink and gold shadows covered the lids, while the lips were muted with concealer.  Skin was made flawless with the newly formulated sheer matte foundation (NEW for Fall 2009) to counteract the sleepy look of the lengthy bottom lashes.  Atop the matte skin, a gentle sweep of shimmer was added to cheekbones to catch the light.

 

 

Below is a step-by-step to recreate the look:

•  Face | Apply NARS Concealer generously, to cover any imperfections;   Use a small amount of NARS Sheer Matte Foundation (NEW for Fall 2009) to create even, beautiful skin; ·         With NARS Yachiyo Brush, dust NARS Single Eyeshadow in Bombshell from apple of cheeks up to temples for a light shimmer without pigment
  

• Eyes |Line lower lashes with NARS Glittler Pencil in Danceteria, Smudge with finger to bring out gold shine;    Use NARS Eye Contour Brush to layer rose gold with golden flecks side of NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Silk Road  (NEW for Fall 2009) over Danceteria;   Apply frosted champagne side of NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Indian Summer (NEW for Fall 2009) over entire lid, blending up to brow;  Cut a set of false eyelashes in half and apply to outer half of lower lash line;·         Apply NARS Larger than Life Volumizing Mascara (NEW for Fall 2009) to lower lashes;  Wet NARS Liquid Eyeliner Brush and apply matte charcoal side of NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Brumes (NEW for Fall 2009), drawing lash shadows on outer half of lower lash line

INSPIRATION | The collection took inspiration from the 1940’s, reflecting the surrealist images of photographer Lee Miller. Combined with a bit of 80’s rock and roll glam, makeup artist Diane Kendal created a strong look without being too girly.

LOOK | “The look is all about the eyes with soft matte lips for contrast,” said Diane Kendal. To bring strength to the face, Diane focused on creating smoky eyes and full brows, while downplaying the lips and keeping skin fresh with a light brushing of blush for a healthy glow.

Below is a step-by-step to recreate the look:

I love NARS. Their products are amazing - great pigmentation, nice lasting power, incredible feel, sweet colors. But somehow, their collections always look a bit disjointed to me, though. Is it just me? There are usually some really oddball, off-the-wall colors... and you just wonder... But then, once you see the products in use.. MAGIC! Take a look at the Spring collection...

The details:

• CHEEKS - blush | Blush Duo - two shades in one compact to give you highlighting and sculpting at the same time. Shade: Hungry Heart (iridescent gold ivory and pink sand w/ golden sheen).

I never knew that François Nars "always considered blush a critical beauty building block". Now that I read that in the press release, I understand why NARS is so famous for their blushes. Clearly, a lot of attention has gone into them, and I see why now. Oh, the press release also says Nars referred to glitter as "jewelry for the face." I like that!

I am all over Shrinagar. "Metallic raspberry"!? Hells yeah.

Egea looks lovely. I wouldn't have put those two colors together in a compact, but now I'm inspired! I don't, however, see myself wearing Grenadines - it loos so pretty, but really: when am I going to wear it?

I also really need to (finally!) try a Multiple, so why not start with a duo? I'm going to give Orgasm/South Beach a try!

I'm not Cap Vert's target audience, but Oprah should jump on it! It would be perfect for her skin tone! Maybe I should give her a call...
