Why mask?
Let's start with a quick rundown of why we want to have a mask in our stash. Masks can not only draw out impurities from the skin that are missed by routine cleansing, but they often exfoliate, too. Many masks also add a boost of good stuff skin needs, like toning, oil control, or hydration. Other masks mostly add a lovely, youthful radiance (who minds that?) and others even tighten the skin temporarily (and are therefore perfect for before a big event!). Some masks are excellent at clearing the gook out of pores, reducing the appearance of blackheads or congested skin.
You must
consider what type of skin and skin concerns you
have. Oily with breakouts? Try a clay or mud mask, a gel/peely style,
or anything labeled "clarifying". Need extra moisture? Avocado,
honey, and other rich, fatty ingredients are the key; look for
"hydrating" in the name. Sensitive skin that will
need extra gentle ingredients? Cucumber and aloe are some ingredients
to try.
How to mask
There
are several styles of masks of course; nothing can be easy, right? Some
stay on for awhile then you scrub them off, while others sit and then
get tissued- or rinsed off. Yet others peel off, taking debris and yuck with them. Let me tell ya, if you
love pulling off peeling sunburn (ew, I do not!), you'll love that
kind of mask. Check the product's packaging to find out how to apply
and remove the mask.
Most masks are best used two to three times a week max, though careful experimentation can lead you to discover the best routine for you. If you have combination skin, you may want to apply one mask on your oily bits, and another elsewhere.
